How-To: Beachy Waves
In the steamy summer months, the last thing you want to do—or do to your hair—is to add waves or curls with hot styling tools. But there are two easy ways to create those sought-after beachy waves without damaging your hair or taking a lot of time: use a braid or a bun.
For both techniques, begin with damp hair and apply a sea salt spray like Paul Mitchell Awapuhui Wild Ginger Texturizing Sea Spray or a texture spray like Total Results Rock It Texture Sea Spray. This will create that lived-in texture that will ultimately help create your just-back-from-the-beach waves.
Evenly distribute the product throughout your hair by combing through with large tooth comb from roots to ends. You're now ready for your technique of choice.
Waves from Braids
For the braids technique, start by dividing your hair into two sections from the front hairline to the back of your neck, dividing left from right. Braid your hair into two, large, loose braids and allow hair to dry completely.
Once hair is completely dry, take the braids out and work your fingers through using your fingers like a large "comb" to loosen the waves. Finish by applying a texture cream like Sexy Hair Slept In. This will create that lived-in look, plus add some control.
Finally, complete with a few shots of hairspray, like Paul Mitchell Worked Up. You should now have beautiful, summer style, beachy waves.
Waves from Buns
For the buns technique, begin by preparing the hair and sectioning it just like with the braid technique. However, instead of braids, place your hair into a series of old-school buns, 1-2 on each side of the head, and let dry completely. For bigger waves, use looser, larger buns. For tighter waves, try smaller, tighter buns.
Like with the braids, when your hair is completely dry, remove the buns and work your fingers through the waves. Finish and style just like the braid technique with a texture cream and spritz of hairspray and you are off with easy, breezy, beachy waves.
